Great read. It takes a special person to entertain while talking about freight. It’s also interesting that you went from talking about how you can’t ship anything cheaply to talking about wanderlust--shipping yourself. I feel that. It seems harder to travel Bourdain-style these days because so much of the accoutrements are right here. We have a place nearby to get killer cafe con leche y tostada. There’s a James beard nominated Oaxacan kitchen in our neighborhood. I have ouzo in our freezer. BUT STILL it’s been a few years since I’ve actually been out of the country and with a 4-yo with special needs it will probably be a few more.

Looking forward to hearing you elaborate about one of those upcoming travels, thanks for taking us there.

Tony, thanks so much for reading and saying this. YES! I assume you mean Soy Cubano! Javier and Zureli are a GEM and their food is as good or better than anything in Miami. AND yes, Maiz de la Vida, or my personal fave Albrije. Both are excellent. I do appreciate Nashville. I am very fortunate to live here. Its home. BUT, yes the BUT, I feel like it's a scene and not a culture. It's got a food scene but not a food culture. It's got a music scene but Nashville is not Music City, its Music BUSINESS City. I'm not interested in the business. It's probably old age and of course it's nitpicking. It's probably more to do with the encroachment of technology and the sameness of everywhere. I probably am being nostalgic for the past in places where it's already gone.

Yes! Maiz and Soy Cubano. GEMS is right. Not the same as winter in Miami or walking the streets in Mexico but…gems. “Scene and not a culture.” I really hadn’t thought of it that way, but it resonates. I’ll be thinking about that. I hope the ‘sameness of everywhere’ doesn’t eventually happen everywhere…
